Historic ceremony marks end of electoral process amid tension and uncertainty

President-Elect Paul Biya will be sworn into office this Thursday, 6 November 2025, at the “Paul Biya Glass House” in Ngoa-Ekele, Yaoundé. The ceremony, which concludes the October 7 presidential election, ushers the veteran leader into his eighth term after 43 years in power.

Biya, who triumphed over 11 other candidates, including Issa Tchiroma Bakary who has disputed the results, begins another mandate in a country grappling with unrest and tension. In several regions, ghost town operations have persisted since the announcement of results, reflecting deep divisions and public unease.

Security has been tightened in the capital as Cameroonians await the official oath-taking that cements Biya’s long political journey and opens yet another chapter in the nation’s complex democratic story.
