By Edward Pentin, Rome Correspondent for National Catholic Register Blessed Popes John XXIII and John Paul II will be canonized on April 27, 2014, Divine Mercy Sunday, the Vatican has officially confirmed. In a statement released Sept. 30, the Vatican said that Pope Francis "decreed that Blesseds John XXIII and John Paul II will be enrolled among the saints on April 27, 2014, the Second Sunday of Easter, of the Divine Mercy." The Vatican said the Holy Father announced his decision at 10am at an ordinary public consistory made up of cardinals and bishops in the Consistory Hall of the Vatican Apostolic Palace, during the celebration of mid-morning prayer. The news was widely expected. The Register was among the first to report the high probability of Divine Mercy Sunday as the chosen date when Pope Francis revealed it in a conversation. Dr. Richard P. Bucher discusses the History and Meaning of Ash Wednesday

Ash Wednesday is the name given to the first day of the season of Lent, in which the Pastor applies ashes to the foreheads of Christians to signify an inner repentance. But what is the history and the meaning of this Christian holy day? Ash Wednesday, originally called dies cinerum (day of ashes) is mentioned in the earliest copies of the Gregorian Sacramentary, and probably dates from at least the 8th Century. One of the earliest descriptions of Ash Wednesday is found in the writings of the Anglo-Saxon abbot Aelfric (955-1020). In his Lives of the Saints, he writes, "We read in the books both in the Old Law and in the New that the men who repented of their sins bestrewed themselves with ashes and clothed their bodies with sackcloth. Now let us do this little at the beginning of our Lent that we strew ashes upon our heads to signify that we ought to repent of our sins during the Lenten fast." Aelfric then proceeds to tell the tale of a man

Avocats San Frontier (ASF) expresses concerns over the wellbeing of persons in detention in Cameroon

According to human rights organizations a prisoner is a person who is kept in a prison as a punishment for a crime that they have committed. This however does not make him or her less human and so prisoners have a right to be treated as human beings with some dignity. Ndi Nelson the NW regional secretary for the National commission for human rights and freedoms while appreciating the management of prisoners in Cameroon prisons said the situation needs real improvement. Even though there are efforts to improve he adds Cameroon is still far below standards. It is this kind of treatment that caused the organization “lawyers without boarders” to develop a project on protecting the dignity of people in detention. The implementation of the project has so far witnessed the organization of workshops in some areas of Cameroon.
