Bamenda III Councilors in Session

The Bamenda III Council of Mezam Division in the North West Region has made public the intention to develop the road network within the municipality. The intention was made known during the budgetary session of the council Tuesday December 5, 2017.

According to the Finance Committee corroborated by the Mayor Fongu Cletus Tanwe, the municipal body will be dedicating the lion’s share of the 2018 budget to improving road network within the municipality. With close to FCFA 200 Million moving up from 140 last year, the council hopes to open new roads, rehabilitate and maintain old ones which according to the Mayor will effectively accompany the development process in council area particularly at the time when the strategic development plan of the council will be reviewed and updated.

With FCFA 589 million as the global budget balanced in revenue and expenditure, the council also intends to improve while continuously maintaining the council water scheme, provide more employment opportunities for the youth, construct markets, and insure councilors amongst others.

The councilors also used the session to decry fraudulent activities that have provided leakages for revenue amongst them particularly proceeds from impounding and parking fees which were only able to generate FCFA 160.000 and FCFA 118.425 in 2017 far below the budgeted FCFA 1M and FCFA 6. 000. 000M respectively. While describing the realizations as “grossly unrealistic, the situation on the field considered”, the municipal officials recommended that “corrective measures must be taken to address” the situation even if it means redeploying or even dismissing those found guilty of providing such leakages must often diverting income into their pockets. Stands in markets, discharge taxes and others also featured in this category.

The socio political crisis in the region, the cutting of City Council annual subvention, leakages in revenue collection chains amongst others emerged as reasons why the budget for 2017could not be realized at 100percent.
